LAPD Police Chase Near 7/11

Last night I was caught up near a swarm of 20+ police cars; it was crazy. At first it was a car chase that went in the opposite direction of where they caught him, but then he suddenly came back and decided to get out of his car near the 7/11 that I was at. Before some undercover cops just blew past the 7/11 driveway and were chasing this guy down. He must have been a serious criminal. You can see the dude jumping out of his car and running as the cops go on foot and chase after him.

Seriously though, it felt like a movie was happening right before my eyes with all the action and moving around that was happening. I should’ve done a better job of recording the scene by getting out of the car, but I didn’t want to be caught up in a possible shoot out. This isn’t the worst that I have seen though, as I was once at a church where a good deal of gun shots were fired. The LAPD came BLOWING with over 50+ cops, it was quite a scene to behold. Has anyone else been in a situation like this?

We are all insane. That is what original sin means. Sin is insanity. It is preferring finite joy to infinite joy, creatures to the Creator, an unhappy, Godless self to a happy, God-filled self. Only God can save us from this disease. That is what the name “Jesus” means: ‘God saves’.

Obama: God Bless Planned Parenthood

President Obama is the first sitting president to publicly speak on Planned Parenthood:

“When politicians try to turn Planned Parenthood into a punching bag, they’re not just talking about you,” he said. “They’re talking about the millions of women who you serve.”

“The fact is, after decades of progress, there’s still those who want to turn back the clock to policies more suited to the 1950s than the 21st Century,” Obama said. “And they’ve been involved in an orchestrated and historic effort to roll back basic rights when it comes to women’s health.”

“Thank you Planned Parenthood. God bless you. God bless you,” Obama concluded.

I shouldn’t say this is particularly surprising as this is coming from a man that has supported infanticide if the woman so chooses. Pro-lifers have pointed out the implications of abortion for some time now, but it was simply dismissed as a slippery slope. First, I think it should be obvious to anyone that a distinct human being is inside that woman’s womb (it’s not the woman’s body) and it has all the capacities for reasoning and willing in its nature or else it could never develop its capacities into what we see in adults. Second, even if that is not granted, you are senselessly taking away the future hopes and dreams of that life. Lastly, you were once a fetus and that is all you need to know to see that abortion is wrong. If you were not identical to that fetus, then it was not you because you could never exist without first being a fetus. If one was to go back in time and take your life then, it would be just as wrong as killing you now.

The Infertility Argument For Same-Sex Marriage

The Maverick Philosopher has a superb blog post refuting the infertility argument that is often used in support of SSM. The essential argument goes like this: If infertile couples can get married, then so can homosexual couples because there is no relative difference. I just love how he wastes no time with emotional appeals or ad hominems but instead makes an excellent logical response. He is clearly a much more refined thinker than I am, that alone should earn him some respect even if you disagree with his position. He’s not even a Christian and he holds to the same principles as I do.

That’s one thing that annoys me about some of the people I have debated this issue on. With the exception of my friend Robert, they just cannot discuss this issue without putting you down as some “homophobe’ or without being high minded and incredibly dismissive. They have told me that  they are glad that I am losing this battle in America or dismiss my reasoning as just “pseudo-rationalism” or some other nonsense. Honestly, it’s best not to debate issues with someone that you know is going to be that way. On the other hand, you can only hope that they can at least show some respect to thinkers like Maverick (or Bill).

Why I Love Philosophy

Philosophy is a world full of wonder, of ideas, and of mind puzzling problems. You can spend a lifetime in search of its truths and yet feel as if you are as ignorant as when you first started. It illuminates common sense principles and transforms them into abstract concepts that are beyond what we commonly experience but of which can be justified through our common experience. Systems of thought have been created from these principles (notably Aristotle and Aquinas) by making subtle distinctions and organizing them in such a cohesive way that one principle is shown to follow from the other. It is like a well built city, structured in such a way that every function of the city will work together to fulfill the good of the society. Nothing is more breathtaking than putting together the pieces of this system of thought and applying it in such a way that it becomes a citadel with monumental walls of steel.

4 Weird (or Crazy) Claims About the Boston Bombing

There has been a lot of commotion over the Boston bombing lately, some of which I had not known until my friend Justin had informed me of their existence. Some of it is absolutely retarded as we will see, but others are just a bit weird. It’s amazing just how much conspiracy nonsense can be produced from the confusion that this attack produced. Though to be fair, not everything I will be mentioning here is utter nonsense. But clearly there are going to be some conflicting reports at first when news agencies are attempting to get their information, so to suggest that this proves some kind of conspiracy is just a failure to see that news agencies are not infallible. It’s shallow research and shows a lack of critical thinking. As Christians we are to test all things and hold on to that which is good. So without further ado, let’s go through four weird (or crazy) things that have been said about the Boston Bombing:

Moral Relativism’s Cruel Logic

I really like how Brian Godawa made a short film like this that demonstrates philosophical ideas and their consequences. Now this is sometimes used against atheism and I can see its force, but some of the more sophisticated atheists could avoid this issue altogether by appealing to some natural law-esque standard of ontologically accounting for moral values. At least they can do so without directly appealing to God (albeit impossible not to do so indirectly, imo), but the fact remains that morality fits much better with a theistic worldview than a naturalistic worldview.

Prayers For Boston

In light of the recent tragic events that have occurred in Boston, I think we as Christians should take the time to pray for those who have been affected by this and do our part to help any of the people out there who need that support. As I watched the images on my computer, I could only imagine what it would be like if I was there instead. The closest I have been to danger was in a gang shoot out near the church I was at, but even that does not compare to compare to this tragedy. Let’s pray together and remember that anyone of us could have died instead on that day:

Dear Loving Father,

We know you know all things and will use all things for good in accord to your grande purpose.  Please comfort those in this disaster with your love and if they have not turned to you then please use this event to turn their hearts of stone into hearts of flesh. May they see the truth and be granted eternal life in your Son’s name.

This life is fleeting and fragile, no one can escape death unless He who overcame death gives us life. Not everyone who lives deserves life, but not everyone who dies deserves death. We know you have the love and power to make things right as you already have done on that cross.

So please continue to use us in any way to be a light to the world. May we recognize that our life here is temporary and we as sinners deserve death as a result. But in your mercy and grace we live today not so that we can continue in our pointless activities but to make a difference in the world for your name’s sake. Thank you, Lord.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen
